There’s A New Search Engine In Town, and It’s Really Cuil!

August 8th, 2008

By Paul Ranger

A new search engine has surfaced, and it is called “cuil.” I believe it is pronounced “cool” Their website cuil.com suggest you’ll have over 121,6 billion web pages available to search through. They claim to search more pages than anyone else. In their comparison with the others they say they search, “three times as many as Google and ten times as many as Microsoft.”

They also say, “rather than rely on superficial popularity metrics, Cuil searches for and ranks pages based on their content and relevance…” That to me sound almost like google, except for the popularity part. Google does deliver results based on the popularity of a particular page. The more popular the page, the more chance that the web page will end up on the first search result on google.com, but, Cuil.com is more interested in relevance. Certainly, if you have a business to run on-line the new differences are very important. Where your page was lost before, it may now be found.

If what cuil.com is promising they’re able to deliver, It may prove what the experts have been saying, “content is king” What that means is even if you have good and relevant content, but, lack popularity with google because other websites didn’t link to you as much as the other website with the similar content, You may do better in the new search engine if you have better content in the way of relevance to the searched keyword or phrases. Therefore you may need to improve on your content. Of course this is speculation on my part. It is a conclusion based on what They say further on the page, “When we find a page with your keywords, we stay on that page and analyze the rest of its content, its concepts, their inter-relationships and the page’s coherency.” That seems like a hint to improve one’s content if you want your page to be found. This to me, would be another great equalizer; where as the big sites are able to buy links to satisfy google’s algorithm, or pay a staff to write content for them, You won’t necessarily have to compete with their deep pockets to be found. You don’t have to pay a lot of money for good accurate content even though it may happen slower for you.

Whether you are selling a product on-line or just posting ads, content in relation to your product or theme is still important for visibility on both Google and the new cuil.com. Some like myself, have found that submitting free articles (which is content) to websites such as article-content-king.com and other sites like it, help to increase my page popularity with google. (My mistake was not continuing to write since 2006, until recently, plus one link is out dated, and I lost the ranking because I didn’t deliver new content. ) Many people will go to article-content-king.com and extract my article with my links which points back to my site, then, they’ll post my article on their site which allows me to get many links back to my site. However, since Cuil.com is not interested in popularity but content and relevance, then, it seems using original good content on your site which they may present to someone searching for what you have, even though, you may not show up at least on the first page on google. This might be a way to cover bases in both places.

If cuil.com is to make a positive difference in the world of search for both searcher and website owners. more people will have to be aware of, and use this new search tool. Although cuil is not paying me, I don’t mind getting the word out. Competition is good for the market place. I hope cuil will be cool.

Will Americans get Debt Bail Outs From The Government As The Banks Did?

July 20th, 2008

By Paul Ranger

To paraphrase the Feds, it is in the best interest of the country to keep the banks solvent. Therefore, they gave them money to stay open. It was said that these banks were irresponsible in their lending and in addition took advantage of borrowers’ naivety. Nonetheless they were given a reprieve and told to do better next time.

Will this American Government bail out the millions of Americans who are now suffering under mountains of debt including student loans?

Yes, some borrowers were irresponsible and some were not. Some experienced circumstances beyond their control, such as, illnesses, the untimely death of a bread winner, the extended deployment of a soldier spouse abroad. Keeping things in perspective, the banks were irresponsible also weren’t they?

With the help of the Current administration and congress, financial institutions were handed a present in the form of laws making it more difficult for borrowers to file bankruptcy in 2005. Ted Kennedy was one of few senators who spoke up for the American people against the greedy Banks (No, I am not a Democrat. Just Practical). Keep in mind that these institutions are allowed to write off bad debt after a while, but, it’s more profitable for them to keep you in a debt you may never pay off, because of the tremendous mounting interest and fees they have been able to collect from You and I. It has made them very rich indeed. It would be unbalanced sympathy to cry tears for these banks and their high maintenance executives. Even though they are in “trouble” now They have already taken their riches.

What has gotten me all stirred up over this matter? I just read the story below from The New York Times Website

“Given a Shovel, Americans Dig Deeper Into Debt

The collection agencies call at least 20 times a day. For a little quiet, Diane McLeod stashes her phone in the dishwasher.

But right up until she hit the wall financially, Ms. McLeod was a dream customer for lenders. She juggled not one but two mortgages, both with interest rates that rose over time, and a car loan and high-cost credit card debt. Separated and living with her 20-year-old son, she worked two jobs so she could afford her small, two-bedroom ranch house in suburban Philadelphia, the Kia she drove to work, and the handbags and knickknacks she liked.

Then last year, back-to-back medical emergencies helped push her over the edge…” Read the full story at: nytimes.com
